ABOUT CROSSFIT

What is CrossFit?

“CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program built on constantly varied, if not randomised, functional movements executed at high intensity.” Founder Greg Glassman

The Aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness to prepare everyone for not only the unknown but the unknowable, CrossFit’s speciality is in NOT specialising. Crossfit is the “Sport of Fitness.”

CrossFit can be best defined by founder Greg Glassman’s article, “What is Fitness.”

In the past, those considered ‘fit’ would normally come under the umbrella of an endurance athlete that would compete in Iron Mans, Triathlons and Marathons. The problem is: where does this leave the rest of our elite athletes including our Olympians such as:

  • Weightlifters (Power, Strength, Agility, Flexibility)
  • Basketballers (Power, Speed, Agility, Balance, Coordination, Accuracy, Stamina)
  • Table Tennis Players (Speed, Agility, Accuracy)
  • Sprinters (Speed)

What CrossFit aims to do is to get better at all areas of fitness including following components of fitness.

10 CROSSFIT GENERAL PHYSICAL SKILLS

If your goal is optimum physical competence then all the general physical skills must be considered:

1. Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance
The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen.
2. Stamina
The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy.
3. Strength
The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
4. Flexibility

The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.

5. Power

The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.

6. Speed

The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.

7. Coordination

The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.

8. Agility

The ability to minimise transition time from one movement pattern to another.

9. Balance

The ability to control the placement of the bodies centre of gravity in relation to its support base.

10. Accuracy

The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.
