CrossFit Session Beginner’s Guide

You’re a beginner at CrossFit and about to attend your very first session. Are you asking yourself; what should I know?

You don’t need to know ANYTHING before your first CrossFit class.  Just have an open mind and try it! We will look after you.

No experience required, no judgement because everyone in the beginners class is a beginner! So, now you probably ask yourself why should I read further if I don’t need to know anything? Well, if you’d like to be prepared, there are a couple of things that might be good to know.

CrossFit & On-Ramp CrossFit

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. In addition, CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements. These said movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and much more.

What Is On-Ramp CrossFit Session?

The goal with On-Ramp CrossFit sessions/classes is to teach you the foundational movements of CrossFit. This is where you’ll be doing movements such as squats and deadlifts. Furthermore, it’s incredibly important to understand the correct way to do these with the right form. Not only will this help you from avoiding any injury or hurting yourself, a good form is essential to your long-term progress.

What & Who Is It For?

CrossFit is for anybody looking to improve their fitness, strength, and some even lose weight with a training program. However, CrossFit will appeal or not appeal to certain types of people.

CrossFit Session Beginner’s Guide: Strand CrossFit

Drop In Early

Be a bit early to get to know the surroundings, talk to the coaches and let them know if you have any special requirements, questions or concerns. Get to know the other participants and make yourself comfortable.

Water

Different from gyms, you only need to take a water bottle with you – that’s it!

Clothing

We recommend comfy clothing which is not loose or baggy – something that you feel comfortable in. You need to be able to move easily and your coaches should be able to look at your movements (shorts/tights and a shirt is perfectly fine). Wear training sneaker, nothing too casual but it doesn’t have to be a running shoe (we won’t run a marathon, yey!).

Food

You should eat before you workout, as you should do before any workout. Don’t eat too early – you might be running and jumping. Dealing with food while working out usually makes everything a little bit harder. We suggest a light meal, nothing too heavy but also don’t starve before a workout. You’ll find the right balance – if you struggle with it, just talk to your coaches.

Sore

You might be sore after your first (definitely the first, maybe even more) workouts, don’t worry – it will happen all the time! Just keep moving and let the blood flow. Go for a long walk, try some relaxing rowing, a swim in the magnesium pool at Strand Fitness CBD, a light jog between sessions or even a Steam Room session or Sauna. The more often you go to CrossFit, the more you’ll adjust to the movements and the less sore you’ll feel.
